The Catholic Media Association recognized Outreach during its recent awards ceremony, honoring an in-depth profile of a Catholic sister whose ministry to transgender people has been called groundbreaking.
Journalist David Van Biema’s profile of Luisa Derouen, O.P., a Catholic sister who pioneered ministry to transgender people, won second place in the “Best Multimedia Package” category. The profile, “No Body Now But Yours,” included photos, videos and a narration by the author as well as Anthea Butler, John Dickerson, Adam Llorens, James Martin, S.J., Maria Shriver and Christine Zuba.
Additionally, Outreach received an honorable mention in the “Best Online Content Not Published in Print” category and Outreach’s executive director, Michael O’Loughlin, won first place in the “Best Feature Article—National General Interest Magazines” category for his report in America, “When a Catholic hospital becomes for-profit.”
“We are delighted that the important articles, essays and reflections Outreach publishes each week not only serve our audience well, but are also being recognized by our colleagues at the Catholic Media Association,” Mr. O’Loughlin said.
The awards were announced June 27 during the organization’s meeting in Phoenix.
